NYC People and Comedy fans, go check out Big Ass Movie at UCBNY this Monday, Jan 25th. Come see what happens when a movie’s scenes and dialogue are made up on the spot, just like in Avatar. If it does well, maybe it’ll get added to the regular calendar.robmichaelhugel:

fortnightly presents Trust Us, This Is All Made Up, with an improv performance from the Richmond Comedy Coalition.
At 9:30pm I finally breathed a sigh of relief when the entire event was over, I was down the street eating dinner, and I could deem it a success. As a promoter I think there are very few occasions where I’ve not gotten nervous; even when the venue sold out in advance, or there was a line around the block 30 minutes before doors (both were extremely rare occasions, I promise).Gallery 5 had everything in place for me when I got there, the improvisers all arrived early and were a pleasure to meet and work with, and the fact that people showed up 20 minutes before the doors opened is always a great sign. I was especially self-conscious of the film, which documents the story of TJ Jagodowski and David Pasquesi, two longtime Chicago improvisers Second City veterans. While insightful, funny and interesting to comedy geeks, how would the general public perceive a film where one of the main subjects states that he’d die without improv?
Luckily the crowd that came out was fully supportive and laughed throughout the entire night. It seemed like everyone enjoyed the live performance as well as the insight and performances in the film, and got just a taste at just how nuanced performing improv is. I consider the crowd of strangers a statement to the diverse makeup of Richmond. Hopefully some of these fresh faces saw that comedy truly can exist in Richmond, and word will continue to spread about the talents of the city. I’m also hoping this will also allow me to continue to bring new and unique events to town. I was eyeing The Room, but it looks like Movieland caught wind of it and snatched it up (Jan 29th & 30th) . I guess I need to keep my other goals under wraps.
Oh, and I created a facebook fan page to track future fortnightly events. Become a fan and stay in the know.

GPOYW:Post Holiday NYC Escape
The uber-talented Andrew took this with my new camera at our brunch at Five Leaves. Note to self, NYC is not a pleasant place to visit during the winter, whether the holiday madness has faded or not. After this photo I braved the madness that is B&H, aimlessly took photos around the city, and then passed out at 9pm. I did, however, get to see the Tim Burton Moma Exhibit thanks to an awesome FOT, and see Shannon perform at Harold Night at UCB before I left town. I’ll come back when I can feel my toes at the end of the day.

Aubrey Plaza and Internet Fat Guy John Gemberling star in Twilight: Three Wolf Moon.

Shannon Coffey really sells it as curious high school girl. Congrats Coffey!

I can’t even put into words how much this needs to become real, but I’ll try: This really, really needs to become real.

Second City comes to Richmond via RVANews

I was lucky enough to finally get to work with the great people over at RVA News to put together this preview of The Second City and their 50th Anniversary Tour. I get to see the show tonight, so I’ll let everyone know how it is.

Scharpling & Wurster & The Gathering of the Friends Of Tom

In celebration of tonight’s Gathering of the FOT I figured it was worth posting some more Best Show gems. Here’s an in-depth interview with Scharpling & Wurster for the A Special Thing podcast from a few years ago that pulls back the curtain on the workings of The Best Show.

They mention some stage appearances in the interview, and while I couldn’t find video of Jon from the Magnet appearance, here’s a few Philly Boy Roy appearances (with a joke so good it’s worth telling twice).

Philly Boy Roy appears at XX Merge celebration.

TumblrTuesday: Photographer Seth Olenick has begun posting his photos of your favorite comedy personalities. He’s like the David LaChapelle of Comedy (that’s weird to write); Worth the follow.

GPOYW: DCM in NYC edition.

For my final DCM post I wanted to throw a bunch more info from my trip so we can get back to the senseless viral videos that are the bread and butter of the site. While DCM was an amazing and unforgettable chapter of my trip, it was sandwiched by two other awesome happenings.

On Friday afternoon I was able to get some time with Bryan Tucker (profiled in my Richmond comedy post) for an excellent interview. I was lucky enough to see the historic SNL writers room and spend almost an hour in his office, the nearest quiet spot in midtown (which he shares with John Lutz). Bryan was incredibly friendly and open about his experiences starting out in comedy, which I hope to get out to the world before long.

After the chaos and late nights (early mornings?) ended I scheduled another meeting with a friend of a friend, who gave me 2+ hours of advice on my feature screenplay. Stuart was extremely helpful with his feedback, and in most cases confirmed my fears over the weak areas. Most importantly I received positive affirmation of the areas I thought worked and now I’ve now got a mess of thoughts to sort through as I reconstruct this thing. I’m gonna have to carve some time out of my “Summer of Fun” to tackle this.

Here’s some photos from my trip; more available on Flickr. (My brother has better looking live shots).
